PART 2
Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
Enoch Arden, οp. 38, TrV. 181 (melodrama for narrator and piano, on the poem of the same name by Alfred, Lord Tennyson)
This narrative masterpiece of English literature is a quirky love story that tells the myth of Ulysses through a different lens. First published in 1864, it has inspired many great artists. Richard Strauss wrote, in 1897, a unique piece for narrator and piano inspired by Tennyson’s poem. Enoch Arden is an everyday hero, both wise and stoic. He is a figure obviously influenced by the Scriptures embodying strong moral values and acting as an ambassador of honesty and kindness. Through him, we witness a peculiar journey, a journey of life and emotional coming of age. Enoch confronts his truth and the perishability of human existence.
